Why do I need higher limits of liability insurance on my auto policy?

First off, what the heck is liability insurance?  Liability is the coverage that pays the other party when you damage their property or injure them.

We have people all the time say, I just need the minimum liability because it’s an old vehicle.  Your vehicle may be old but the age of a vehicle really does not have much to do with how much damage it can cause.

A 1995 Chevrolet Suburban can cause just as much damage as a 2015.

If you buy minimum liability limits and you have a serious accident, the limits may not be enough to cover the cost to repair or replace the other vehicle or pay their medical bills.  If someone causes you injury or damages your property, don’t you want them pay your bills?

What happens if your policy only covers $25,000 of property damage and you T-Bone a 2020 Mercedes Benz?  And the cost to repair this $100,000 car is $35,000?  They sue you, yes they do indeed take you to court.  They could actually get a judgement against you and garnish your wages.  It happens all the time.

What does garnish your wages mean?   wage garnishment is when a court issues an order requiring your employer to withhold a certain amount of your paycheck and send it directly to the person or institution to whom you owe money, until your debt is paid off.

Do the right thing, think about the other guy.

And get this, some insurance companies charge less for higher limits, especially at renewal.
